Writing To Explain

Why are five hundreds and three ones written as 503 - how do I explain?

We use a place value system.  hundreds/tens/ones, therefore the 5 is in the hundreds place.  The zero is holding a place for the tens place value and the three is in the ones place.  That's why it is written as 503.
